Sling Media (makers of the Sling Box) announced today that they've agreed to be acquired by Echostar for around $380 million. Sling has been a favorite of ours at AlwaysOn and was our top pick for the 2007 OnHollywood 100. I originally covered them way back in 2005 - you can see that article here.
What I've always liked about Sling was their willingness to break with conventional wisdom. They took on what founder Blake Krikorian called "subscription fatigue" by offering their product for a single price with no strings attached. Even more impressively, as a startup they went after the holy grail of all consumer products - big box retailer (like Best Buy) shelf-space. Who does that???
Cool company, cool product, great job.
